We've added some things to the cabin over the years, all to make it more homey and convenient. Though we still have no running water, we do have a kitchen sink that Dean donated. We put in some old kitchen cabinets that we got from Bob Pichler real cheap, and even added drain pipes to run the water outside. We still haul water (both hot and cold) each time we stay at the cabin.
We've installed a few gas lanterns on the walls. They helped brighten things up quite a bit. Somewhere along the line we came across a 10 old school chairs, nice and sturdy, that have been put to good use. John Butson gave us a nice kitchen table, strong enough to stand up to the teenagers. We have several futons now, and more than enough sleeping places. We've had about 20 people staying with us a few times.
The most important addition though is the cement pad under the fireplace. The original cement blocks we had there were caving in from animals tunneling their way into the cabin. We replace them with a cement pad.
While the cement was still setting up, Josh and Janet came up with a unique idea, to name the cabin and write the name into the cement. Our thoughts were that the books that started this dream long ago were called "Foxfire". What a perfect name for the cabin. We gathered stones and used them to write the word Foxfire into the cement. Then we took an old rope and made designs around the edges.
Our Cabin "Foxfire" is finally finished.
This is our second year staying at the cabin for deer hunting. We had built the log railings for the lofts just the week before. It was a lot easier to let the kids sleep up there without worrying they would fall down.
